A planning aid, not financial advice. Interest on the fund is ignored, so the real timeline may be slightly shorter.
How to build the fund
- Count only essentials: rent or mortgage, utilities, food, transport, insurance and minimum debt payments.
- Start with one month. Once that is in place, work towards three, and towards six or more if your income is irregular or others depend on you.
- Keep the money separate from your everyday account, somewhere you can reach it within a day, and set up an automatic transfer on payday.
